Beatminerz Radio. Chuck D called them “Pioneers in internet radio.”. There was a time when you could turn on your radio and know that what you were hearing was real and authentic and selected with care by someone whose musical tastes you trusted, the DJ. The DJ was the selector a.nd you knew when they played that new artist you’d never heard before, that thought and time had gone into the choice to do so. Those days are gone, right? Or are they, in fact, on their way back? The answer is yes, if Bucktown USA and Da Beatminerz have anything to say about it. In 1997 Beatminerz Radio changed the game. At that time DJ Evil Dee was on WQHT Hot 97’s Monday Night Flava Mix and was recognized internationally as one half of Da Beatminerz with his brother and business partner, Mr. Walt. Da Beatminerz, as a crew, were renowned internationally as a premier Hip Hop DJ and Production team. However, a true artist is never satisfied and so believing they could push the envelope further Da Beatminerz connected with the Pseudo Online Network’s 88HipHop.com channel, one of the first online Hip Hop radio stations. Internet radio was still in its technological infancy but Da Beatminerz knew they were onto something unique and unprecedented in music, particularly in Hip Hop. On the other side of town, figuratively speaking, Cynical Smith was blazing her own trail. In 1996 she co-founded Ear to the Ground’s Hip Hop Countdown with Almitra Gasper on 105.9 Community Radio in New York City. Searching through charts and playlists every week, they would play their countdown with the heart and soul of those who truly love Hip Hop. Her efforts did not go unacknowledged. Ear to the Ground’s Hip Hop Countdown caught the attention of DJ Evil Dee and when 88HipHop was born so began a partnership based on a deep love of Hip Hop. In 1998 they took it a step further with livestreaming in its earliest versions. You could now watch the DJ while they played your favorite artists and music - and Da Beatminerz, Cynical Smith and Beatminerz Radio changed forever the interaction between Hip Hop, radio and the internet. Running for 3 years, what they were doing then is, to this day, discussed in tech and radio circles as innovating ahead of its time. Pseudo Online Network, 88HipHop and Beatminerz Radio were integral in laying a foundation for the future of internet radio and Hip Hop. When the show ended in 2000, Cynical Smith and Da Beatminerz remained close friends and colleagues. Cynical Smith began to explore the medium of film as a documentarian and partnered with General Steele of iconic Hip Hop duo, Smif-N-Wessun, to build Bucktown USA, a film and video production company and record label. DJ Evil Dee and Mr. Walt continued to break ground musically with Beatminerz releases on Rawkus Records, stacking up production credits from projects with various artists and a steady stream of classics gifted to Hip Hop lovers. In 2002, DJ Evil Dee decided to focus his energies on passing along his considerable expertise and skills as one of the first instructors at the highly respected Scratch Academy upon its opening.  Fast forward to 2009, with technology perhaps finally able to keep step with their vision, Da Beatminerz reconnected with Cynical Smith and relaunched Beatminerz Radio with a new stable of DJ’s via Ustream Network. In the span of approximately 3 years they have amassed over 150,000 listeners on average internationally due to their honesty, conviction and love of Hip Hop that was evident and paramount in every broadcast. Now, building on the decades of radio, Hip Hop and production experience between them, Cynical Smith and Da Beatminerz envision the next step. With renewed inspiration to empower the DJ, they’re once again seeking to provide that platform for artists like they were able to do early on in their own careers. Presenting a new broadcast facility, a new roster of DJ’s and hosts, and a new partnership between Bucktown USA and Da Beatminerz combined with the same dope Hip Hop, love, passion and dedication that made them Hip Hop innovators in the first place, Beatminerz Radio is back and ready to change the game. The DJ roster reads like a winning team: DJ Evil Dee, Mr. Walt, DJ Esquire, DJ SimE Auto, ChumZilla, DJ Erika B, DJ GetLive, DJ Snatch1, PF Cuttin, Crazy DJ Bazarro, DJ Law, DJ Redboy, DJ Lickashot, DJ Flash, Mishigan (ReggaeBoyz) and that’s just getting started. Upping the stakes from 40 hours/week of programming to 84 hours of planned programming, the new Beatminerz Radio is poised to compete for the ear of the Hip Hop lover and listener with the best of them. Welcome, once again, to Beatminerz Radio: The Home of the DJ.

Welcome, once again, to Beatminerz Radio: The Home of the DJ.

General Steele. BUCKTOWN BABY! General Steele. He was shining when you met him. In 1994, on his debut album “Dah Shinin" that is. With partner in rhyme Tek, they came together to create Smif-n-Wessun. Arguably one of the most prolific and influential rap duos in the history of Hip Hop. And they came through with a squad, Bootcamp Clik. And it wasn’t long before the world recognized this squad, this duo, and most certainly, The General. General Steele began walking the path he’s most well known with, in his own words, “basic training”. Tek and Steele opened shows for Blackmoon, Das Efx, KRSONE and many more before reaching their point of recognition. This exposure to the art of the craft not only kept them humble but allowed that humility to build a reverence for this art form of Hip Hop. So when it came time for the world to be introduced to their sound and style, they were ready. As a result of that hard work and preparation “Dah Shinin" is, to this day, still considered one of the classic albums of Hip Hop. However, this album was so strong and got so much attention, that in 1996 they were served with lawsuit from the gun company Smith & Wesson. But being that true soldiers carry on even in the face of adversity, they chose to keep rocking and changed their name to Cocoa Brovas, knowing that what they were giving the world could overshadow a name. And it did, because their fans embraced Cocoa B’s as they released their second album “Rude Awakening" in 1998. Those were the Rawkus years of Hip Hop. So when the label approached Steele and Tek about releasing their third effort “Still Shinin”, it seemed like a partnership the group would be able to grow with. But life doesn’t always go as planned, Rawkus was acquired by Universal/MCA and an unplanned leak of the project to the public was to be the end of that partnership. But again, true soldiers don’t quit or give up, and neither did The General, as he had come to be known. Throughout Steele’s travels in the music industry he began to become aware of the need for role models, responsible role models. So in thinking and planning ways to be the change he wanted to see in Hip Hop, he conceived of Bucktown USA Entertainment, recruiting and training the Hip Hop soldiers of tomorrow. In this capacity he executive produced The Representatives first album “Angels of Death” in 1999 in an alliance with Duckdown Records, while producing various tracks for his own group, Buckshot, Fab Five and more. When Steele was introduced to Cynical Smith, who was collaborating and producing “Beatminerz Radio" on 88hiphop.com, and an accomplished personality and Hip Hop aficianado in her own right, through mutual friend and colleague DJ Evil Dee of The Beatminerz, a partnership was born. In 2002 the maiden project “Glory”, a compilation of Bucktown USA affiliated artists ranging from New York to Atlanta was released. Between 2002 and 2004 Bucktown USA released the mixtapes “Amerikkka’s Nightmare”, “In The Trenches”, “DJ Bucktown Blasting Off Series" and "HotStyle Takeover”. 2004 saw Bucktown USA take on another role as they not only officially incorporated and became Bucktown USA Entertainment, LLC but also started the Brooklyn based Hip Hop variety show, “Bucktown TV (BTUTV)”, hosted by General Steele and produced by Cynical Smith. The company has gone on to produce videos for Bootcamp Clik, Smif-n-Wessun, Sean Price and Heltah Skeltah with General Steele exercising his skills editing and directing, after making directorial debut with “Jumpin Jumpin" for Supreme of The Representatives and the documentaries, Blackmoon, “Behind the Moon”, and the “Making of.." companion DVD, Sean Price's “Passion of the Price”, and “Respect Due" (a compilation of their BTUTV library). 2009 sees The General embarking on the next tributary on his journey by releasing his debut full-length solo project “Welcome to Bucktown" which not a departure from his homebase of Bootcamp Clik and Smif-n-Wessun, but an exploration of self, creative wisdom and “…a love letter to Brooklyn” (allhiphop.com, 5/6/09). Bucktown USA Entertainment. Welcome to Bucktown! Bucktown USA Entertainment, LLC is about film, video, music and media. The seed was planted in 1995. General Steele of the classic Hip Hop group Smif-n-Wessun and Bootcamp Clik, began producing various recording projects.  Not long after General Steele and Smif-n-Wessun altered the world’s perception of Hip Hop with songs like “Soundboy Burial" (from the debut album Da Shinin, 1995) and while they were laying the foundation to become one of Hip Hop’s most iconic groups, Cynical Smith was developing a following of her own, becoming known for pushing the progression of the art through radio.  In 1996 her show on 105.9, “Ear to the Ground’s Hip Hop Countdown" captured the attention of DJ Evil Dee, 1/2 of The Beatminerz Production Team, and she was offered the opportunity to produce a full online Hip Hop show called Beatminerz Radio on 88HipHop.com, which ran 1997-2000.  The show was so innovative and groundbreaking, combining music and news, it was hailed as a revolutionary way to further Hip Hop culture.  Through their shared colleague and mutual friend, General Steele met Cynical Smith and an alliance was born that fused General Steele’s music production skills with Cynical Smith’s internet and video production base to create Bucktown USA Entertainment, LLC. Beginning in 2002 with the release of the first mixtape project “Glory" under the Bucktown USA imprint, the album featured artists from New York to Atlanta and thus began the Bucktown USA Entertainment journey with the subsequent releases of America’s Nightmare, In the Trenches, DJ Bucktown Blasting Off Series and Hostile Takeover.  In 2004, they started a weekly Hip Hop variety show, “Bucktown USA TV (BTUTV)”, which featured music, videos, interviews and performances of established as well as up and coming artists, and by 2007 the show had been added to the schedule for SandboxTV.com. 2004 was a busy year for the duo. With the birth of their official incorporation to Bucktown USA Entertainment, LLC, that same year Bucktown produced and directed the documentary on Black Moon “Behind the Moon”, as well as the “Making of.." companion DVD.  The pair followed that with a documentary on Hip Hop artist and fellow Bootcamp Clik member, Sean Price, titled “The Passion of the Price" in 2005, and "Respect Due”, a compilation DVD of their library of shows from Bucktown USA TV (BTUTV).  They have since also directed videos for Smif-n-Wessun, Bootcamp Clik, and Lin Que, to name a few. 2009 sees the evolution of the commitment.  Bucktown USA Entertainment, LLC released General Steele’s first full-length solo project “Welcome to Bucktown”, which is being called “…a love letter to Brooklyn” (allhiphop.com, 5/6/09) and features the talents of the various soldiers of Bootcamp Clik, in addition to Shabaam Sahdeeq, Blahzay Blahzay and many more. Cynical Smith, with DJ Evil Dee and Mr. Walt, is reminding folks of what radio should be by re-teaming with them to give us that new flava in the proverbial ear with “Linden Sundays" on the new Beatminerz Radio. And of course, being that Bucktown USA Entertainment, LLC has always been focused on the “multi” in mutimedia, they are also serving up new documentaries and showing the world what it means to contribute to Hip Hop and leave a lasting impression. So keep checking for General Steele and Cynical Smith, together, collectively saying to you, “Welcome to Bucktown”! Cynical Smith. Cynical Smith began her journey with a love of Hip Hop and the knowledge that she wanted to be a part of it.  Her earliest foray into the art was as a Production Coordinator in 1994-1995 with Daniel Hastings, the renowned Hip-Hop Photographer and she knew had to give this force that was changing her life more voice.  So in 1996 she co-founded “Ear to the Ground’s Hip Hop Countdown" with Almitra Gasper on 105.9 Community Radio in New York City.  Searching through charts and playlists every week, they would play their countdown with the heart and soul of those who truly love Hip Hop.  This truth and passion caught the attention of DJ Evil Dee of Da Beatminerz and Cynical was asked to contribute her dedication to a new medium that was in its infant stages.  88hiphop.com and online radio at that time were innovative, new and exciting, and Da Beatminerz with Cynical Smith were about to leave their mark. Beatminerz Radio started off as audio but soon went to video and was streamed online featuring not just music, but news and exclusives, making Beatminerz Radio a Hip Hop household name from 1997-2000.  Cynical Smith, always being one to push the envelop and embrace new ideas, took it one step further when she began producing IBC (Illegal Broadcast) hosted by Channel Live as a talk show portion of the Beatminerz Radio format, addressing issues pertinent to the Hip Hop Community and Culture. As 88hiphop.com was becoming a part of Hip Hop history and she began to wonder what was coming next, she was gifted with her first camera by the VP of Production of the Pseudo Programs Inc., and she began to explore this new way of documenting, commenting and contributing to the world around her.  She produced her first short film in 2002 for Expansion Films, “From Sun Up til Sun Down”, directed by Tania Cuevas, about the Prison Industrial Complex.  During this period she met General Steele of the Hip Hop group Smif-N-Wessun, and seeing her passion for the art reflected in his, their partnership was born and gave life to Bucktown USA TV (BTUTV) featuring music, videos, interviews and performances of up and coming artists as well as established entertainers and was picked up by SandboxTV.com in 2007.  Their company Bucktown USA Entertainment has since produced, filmed and directed several videos for artists such as Bootcamp Clik, Sean Price and Lin Que, while promoting the release of the mixtapes Glory, Amerikkka’s Nightmare, DJ Bucktown Blasting Off Series, and HotStyle Takeover under the Bucktown USA imprint. 2004 saw Cynical Smith as the co-owner and Director of Production for Bucktown USA Entertainment, LLC as the company became officially incorporated and began to produce documentary DVD’s such as Black Moon “Behind the Moon" and the "Making of…" companion DVD.  This was followed by Cynical Smith’s direction for Sean Price “The Passion of the Price”, and “Respect Due”, a DVD of select shows from Bucktown USA TV (BTUTV).  Since 2009, Cynical Smith has allowed her creativity and love of Hip Hop as a force for social commentary to infuse her actions with her work on various projects including a documentary, as yet untitled, about the circumstances surrounding the death of an icon, Malcolm X.  Bucktown USA Entertainment, LLC is also exploring familiar yet uncharted territory with the release of General Steele's first full-length solo album “Welcome to Bucktown" (2009), and she has returned to her roots in radio with "Cyn City Wednesdays" on BeatminerzRadio.com, re-teaming with DJ Evil Dee and Mr. Walt of Da Beatminerz. Love never dies and when she decided that she wanted to be a part of this fresh, new art called Hip Hop that was taking over the streets, she knew it would become a guiding force in her life.  She has allowed that love to guide her in her explorations of the art and the world of Hip Hop thanks her for it.  Cynical Smith: radio, music, film, video and the list goes on from this woman of many talents..better stay tuned and don’t turn that dial. Entering his first competition in 1995 at the tender age of 16, and not placing only encouraged him more. “I would practice DJing for hours at a time, working to get better and perfect my skills”, he remembers. It paid off. In 1997 he placed 1st in Funkmaster Flex’s Pitbull Battle and embarked on his life long affair with the love of Hip Hop. Investing in his first MPC that same year, he began dabbling in production and in 1999 his production was featured on the radio demo for Hip Hop Artist Somali Rose. “Music and Hip Hop were instrumental in the structuring of my life and in shaping who I was to become”, recalls DJ Scandales, citing the influences of Pete Rock, DJ Premier, DITC (Diggin In The Crates Crew), Richie Rich, as well as personal friend and colleague, Ayatollah. And as he embraced this love of Hip Hop, he became more confident in exploring his skills. Between DJing on WONY 90.9 in Oneonta, NY from 1998-99, DJing in clubs in and around the nexus of Hip Hop, New York City, he would soon be commanding venues from Korova Milk Bar on the Lower East Side of Manhattan to the Schomburg Center for Research in Harlem, NYC. Always seeking a challenge, in 2000 DJ Scandales began DJing for artists, backing up Panta at Hot 97 Summer Jam  and holding down artists like Somali Rose, Coolie High and The Experience (AD Skolar, Phase One, Young Diva Tess, Asa Buchanan). He has since produced tracks for Coolie High, MC Friction and Bless Roxwell, held the reigns at WBCR 1190, Brooklyn College Radio and explored the business side of the music as Director of English Music Sales for Rincon Musical, a Latin Music Record Label. 2009 sees DJ Scandales continuing his journey through the world of music and entertainment, now with the ability to add recording engineer and recording equipment repair technician to his growing resume. Hear his work on MC Friction's upcoming project “Fact or Friction" set for release in September, 2009 as well as Bless Roxwell's mixtape “revolutions" to be released in the second half of 2009. DJ Scandales remains busy and can be found behind the turntables at shows for Bless Roxwell, MC Friction and Liberation Music Group (Chen Lo, Damaja D, Jah Medicine, Mo Betta, Shannon Grier) representing his Official Sponsor Elements, NYC, or giving you good music at venues like No Malice Palace, in NYC . With commitment and dedication to the art of his craft, he continues to push the envelop as a DJ, Producer and so much more. Contact and Bookings: scandales@turntabletendencies.com ©2009 J.A.G. Hip Hop Producer Ayatollah Born and raised in Queens, NY, Hip Hop Producer Ayatollah first received mainstream recognition after producing rapper Mos Def’s hit “Ms Fat Booty" the first single off Mos Def’s Black On Both Sides album, for which he received his first Certified Gold Plaque. Following up that hit, Ayatollah earned his second Certified Gold Plaque as the mind responsible for the production on Styles P's hit “The Life" featuring Organized Konfusion legend Pharoahe Monch, released on Rawkus Records compilation album Soundbombing III. A favored producer of many Queensbridge, NY MC’s, in particular and after working with respected Queensbridge Hip Hop artist Cormega on “Raps A Hustle”, off of Cormega’s debut LP “The Realness”, both have spoken of collaborating exclusively on an album, an eagerly awaited project which continues to tantalize both fans of Cormega and Ayatollah. But Ayatollah has been busy giving listeners sonic journeys into his musical landscape by releasing 10 instrumental albums over the past 8 years: So Many Reasons to Rhyme (2003) Personal Legend Vol. I (Fat Beats, 2003) Listen (Soundchron Records, 2006) Now Playing (Nature Sounds, 2006) Louder (Nature Sounds, 2008) Drum Machine (Nature Sounds, 2008) The Quixotic (Nature Sounds, 2010) The Quixotic Remix EP (Nature Sounds, 2010) Cocoon (Nature Sounds, 2010) Live from the MPC60 (Nature Sounds, 2010) A lifelong Hip Hop lover, Ayatollah began his career as a DJ, rocking parties, making mixtapes, and practicing turntablism, competing in the 1991 DMC World DJ Championships before becoming Tragedy Khadafi’s Performance DJ. Following a natural progression into beatmaking, his discography (see attached) reads like a who’s who of true, gritty, lyrical Hip Hop, having worked with some of the art form’s best lyricists, from Rakim (“Cold Feeling”) to Sadat X (“Throw the Ball”) to Ghostface Killah (“WTC" featuring Cappadonna). Ayatollah’s production and unique style and skill can be appreciated whether an artist is gracing the track or whether it’s an instrumental that sets the vibe, both will be on display in various projects slated for 2011 and beyond. Whispers and buzzing of a completed super group collaboration between Ayatollah and WuTang affiliates Hell Razah and Shabbazz The Disciple called T.H.U.G. Angelz as well as a creative spin on the instrumental album concept will only continue to surprise and tantalize his wide and diverse fan base. Contact Info: (p) 347.***.****. MISS SHANI of Stilettos & Sounds, LLC. Miss Shani was bitten by the love bug of music at an early age.  As a child watching the 80’s TV Show “Solid Gold”, Miss Shani knew she wanted to play an integral role in entertainment. Born in Brooklyn and having participated in the YMCA and Girl Scouts, the seed of promoting strong self-esteem and growth as well as community involvement and responsibility was planted early. And the concept and desire to give back by being the change she wanted to see in the world continues to this day. While attending John Bowne High School in the Center for Writing she contributed to the newspaper and magazine, all the while studying dance, music and athletics.  Upon acceptance to Johnson C. Smith University in 1997, she transferred to Morgan State University after her freshman year, making the decision to study Hospitality, where her forward thinking attitude, work ethic and determination saw her appointed as President of the National Society of Minorities in Hospitality for three consecutive years. The organizational and interpersonal skills that allowed Miss Shani to excel in this post also seeded in her a desire and affinity for entrepreneurship, while maintaining her love of music and entertainment, and by 1999, having held a myriad of titles, trip and event planner, party promoter and DJ Manager, she was prepared for a new challenge. Making a decision to explore the modeling world, Miss Shani credits Robert C. Stephens with helping her truly define the question of what a model is and the “art” of modeling inside the business of modeling. She worked on her runway training under Models with Monique and was soon working with Geminii Models as the go to person for runway and photo shoot training. Always one to push the limits of her passions, she was soon offering services for Portfolio Development for clothing designers, photographers and models. In September 2004, Miss Shani attended a moGALs event that offered her the exclusive opportunity to meet face to face with as well as receive guidance and mentoring from Terrie Williams. Widely considered as the “Oprah Winfrey” of PR, Ms. Williams gave Shani words of wisdom that would alter her path and allow her to focus her energies. Ms. Williams left her with the words, “You have a beautiful spirit. Stay Strong, God Bless” and Miss Shani cites this as THE major influence and inspiration for the launch of what has become her entrepreneurial passion, Stilettos & Sounds, LLC.  With the advisement of the CEO of OCE Consulting, Mr. Ted Moffatt, offering his wealth of experience and encouraging her to embrace her natural talents, in 2005 Miss Shani embarked on her next endeavor, combining her love of fashion and music with her knowledge of the inner workings of arts and entertainment, creating and crafting Stilettos & Sounds, LLC. Specializing in representation and consulting services for various talents and businesses throughout the arts and entertainment industry, she has fused her personality, interpersonal skills and work ethic to create a brand that provides Stylishly Loud Events, PR, & Marketing.   Coming into her own, 2006 would prove to be a pivotal year for Miss Shani. After losing her cousin, an anti-gang activist, to gang related violence, she was also diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes and received the blessing of her life, her son. Upheaval can unexpectedly spark growth and the woman that would emerge from this period speaks to Miss Shani’s strength, drive and character. As the daughter of a Democratic delegate, she was at the forefront of the mobilization in Queens for the Barack Obama Campaign, living her commitment to community and involvement, working even harder to build her client base by diversifying and seeking out undiscovered talent as well as solidifying relationships with different community organizations.  2009 sees Miss Shani as an Entrepreneur and a Mother, working towards building better communities and futures through positive reinforcement of strong values, integrity and hard work. Pay attention to this young woman as she continues to leave her mark as CEO/Chief Publicist of Stilettos & Sounds, LLC and her belief that if we all contribute and do our part we can make the future a brighter, better and stylishly loud place to be!
